  • broke some tape players

    August 28th, 2010

Hey in brokenpants.com-of-days-of-yore type news, I had a moment of inspiration or something today and got out my soldering iron today. It’s been packed away inside a toolbox inside a basket inside a closet, along with all the accumulated unused electrical components I have left, but this afternoon I used it to fix some stuff that’s been sitting around. Really basic stuff, just connecting wires to things, but it’s been a long time so I’m crawling and maybe I’ll walk at some point.

Here’s some walkman distortion units that had broken wires

The one on the right was my old favorite during the all too brief Blood Waterfall-as-a-band period of uh 2007-2008ish. It used to sound cool as hell in a feedback loop by itself, with a wide range of PSSSHT sounds, and really responsive to knob twiddling and touching random points on the circuitboard, and the radio parts still worked and kind of mixed with the input. Now it doesn’t even have an input attached and it’s still crazy, it makes loud rhythmic sputtering noises and the volume knob is like LFO rate, and you can still sort of hear the radio, it’s weird……….

Here’s a contact mic! I broke all the ones I used to use, probably from chewing on them too hard. Hope epoxy isn’t poisonous lol!!!!!

Here’s a dumb phone that I will try to use as a mic and hopefully will sound good! Like Japanther except stupid!

Oh also I started this comic a long time ago and hated the way it looked, but it’s an idea I like and I’m going to try to start over and make it a lot bigger and longer and it’ll probably take a million years to never get done but oh well!

Also I think I said this before but I’m trying to write and record musical songs. So far it’s mostly just been a lot of slowing down Steely Dan samples and grooving on that but I’ve been focusing on stripping down the sound and getting back to my roots and brightly punching so who knows perhaps I’ll have some music output someday soon.

Now I have to go off to work! At 10pm on a Saturday night! Say WHAT?????

  • musical things this week

    July 29th, 2008

I tried to print off Pork Chop Robinson #4 today and had some slight hangups (I didn’t put upload all the files? I don’t have any paper?) but it’ll be done done tomorrow. The covers just got spraypainted, and it’s more or less how I pictured it but I’m still a little conflicted… plus there’s orange paint all over one pant leg - no idea how that happened.

  • two cool mixes

    July 20th, 2008

Here’s two things I’ve been listening to:

Buh Bomp updated after one of their lengthy hiatuses. DJ Lil Tiger, the guy who split the first EXCELLENT two hour podcast with the late JD, is back with some sweet ass funky stuff. There’s a drumline part or something in the beginning that kills the groove, but it’s over pretty quick and everything else is awesome.

That cover of “Give It Up” by U-Tern is so nice, and the dudes themselves put it for you to sample sometime last year: link

    gongbath.jpg

This next tape I found through a blog called Video Pop, it’s from Future Cop, check it out here. Yeah it’s like super ironicky 80 music, but the mixing is top notch and the songs are really good pop songs. That Robbie Rob track at the end especially.

    Til next time…

I made this poster for my roommates’ band. It’s not quite done, I still need to add in the info about the show and maybe alter the background, but I think it looks really cool.

  • some Blood Waterfall and some noise tapes

    June 26th, 2008

First off, here’s some new Blood Waterfall me solo material to provide the atmosphere for this post:

Without Pat and Adam, I have to learn to fill in all the holes myself - this is a couple different Casios and my usual pedal stuff… I have an MT-100 I think with dirty sliders so sometimes the drum machine slows down to infinite time between beats, which makes the Casio chords drone rather than play cheesy bass parts, but sometimes it stops making noise or does something bad sounding or whatever. Anyway this is just something from the other night to give you an idea of what I’ve been doing lately.

    sink.jpg

A few months ago I got a random noise tape from a band with the nondescript, hard-to-google name Hot Air Balloon Ride, I think I just bought it from Tomentosa, anyway it opens with a long long segment of a baseball radio broadcast… maybe some effects but nothing to make it interesting. Once the noise comes in it gets really good, though, and later there’s a bunch of radio rock song segments, kind of in a dumb/”we’re ironic” sense, but the thing is the music continues to rock in spite of the obnoxious sound sources, so it’s cool. Oh, here’s another site where they talk about it.

    habr-bol.jpg

This is their new cassette Bundle of Laughs, it’s cool, too! I forgot everything I meant to say about it, but it’s cool. Third Eye Blind or something is on the second side, I know it’s easy when describing the band to just mention the obvious gag samples and neglect the real good stuff, the laser attack synth noise that makes up most of the tape, but… that’s what I’m going to do. Awesome stuff, though, check it out: link

OH also the current best band, Warmer Milks, has just released approximately one million minutes of new music: a cd and a tape on Animal Disguise that I just got in the mail yesterday. Soft Walks is from the high fidelity, more coherent, folk-rock, full band side of the rainbow, really nice stuff, I haven’t listened to the tape yet, and I realized a moment ago there are actually two tapes and one is called Lonesome Drifter but it’s by WM and not Mammal??? Curiouser and curiouser…

    massivedreadlock.jpg

Besides that there’s a double C60 called Massive Dreadock on Every Label Ever, all live? that plods all around the gamut: heavy psyche, weird noise, distilled uncomfortability, etc. Damn, there’s way too much of this stuff all at once, damn.

    loisrenner_1.jpg

There’s a pretty good chance I’m going to buy a scanner tomorrow, so hopefully I’ll scan the last month’s worth of cool drawings I’ve done, and hopefully brokenpants.com will get some content other than disco playlists! Hooray.
